What is a Transition Town initiative?
The Transition Town movement is a way for us to work together to make a better transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy and is gaining "steam" in the US. State College, PA is one example. See Transition 101 for an explanation. The Transition concept emerged from work that permaculture designer Rob Hopkins had done with the students of Kinsale Further Education College in writing an "Energy Descent Action Plan". This looked at across-the-board creative adaptations in the realms of energy production, health, education, economy and agriculture as a "road map" to a sustainable future for the town.
We are exploring the possibility of Gettysburg as a Transition Town, how this would look, and how existing groups can work collaboratively. To get started, we plan to have a study and discussion group. The first book will be Deep Economy by Bill McKibben. "McKibben's animating idea is that we need to move beyond "growth" as the paramount economic ideal and pursue prosperity in a more local direction, with cities, suburbs, and regions producing more of their own food, generating more of their own energy, and even creating more of their own culture and entertainment." The Story of Stuff gives a good overview of the current state. The second book will be the Transition Handbook. A brief, printable synopsis is here. A Transition Town Primer can be downloaded here. An example Energy Descent Action Plan for Totnes, Devon, UK can be found here.
Transition study group - January 24, 2011 Discussion continues with of the remainder of Deep Economy by Bill McKibben after our great meeting with the Local Food Network. The location is expected to be Singmaster at the Seminary. The second book will be the Transition Handbook. A brief, printable synopsis is here. The third book may be Power Trip by Amanda Little. A synopsis is here.

Local currency is everywhere! One Davis Dollar
From Davis, California to the Birkshires, MA, Detroit, MI, Washington, DC, and Baltimore, MD, local currency is popping up everywhere! The idea behind local currencies is to encourage purchases from local businesses. This supports the local economy and minimizes carbon pollution. Some, like the Toronto Dollar, share a percentage with local non-profit community support groups.

Transition Gettysburg message from Will Lane:
The Transition movement arose several years ago in Ireland to address peak oil and climate change by working to build resilient communities grounded in local resources and responding to local initiatives and ideas for projects. Since then, the movement has spread around the world and across the United States. On Wednesday, December 15, Bill Sharp, a local Transition leader from Center County, appeared on WITF’s Radio Smart talk and described some of the project that are now up and running in Pennsylvania, ranging from bike paths to local food networks to regional transportation and water issues. During the one-hour program, Transition activists from Harrisburg city, York and Lancaster counties, and Carlisle called in to offer comments and support. The program is still available for listening at http://www.witf.org/news/smart-talk/5808-transition-towns
Several of us have decided to set up a study group to take a look at what the Transition movement might mean for the Adams County area. Ironically, many Transition-like projects are already in progress here, so a key initial task will involve simply identifying and connecting with all that is already going on in our area. But as a starting point we have decided to read a book by Bill McKibben that explores many Transition themes: Deep Economy: the Wealth of Communities and the Durable Future.
