SAT November 5, 2011, 10 am: Tour Mason Dixon Farms
We toured Mason Dixon Farms. Being environmentally conscious, Mason Dixon Farms saw an opportunity to become energy self-sufficient with the installation of a biogas digester in 1979. The liquid manure flows to a digester which is heated to 108'F by the exhaust from up to five large generators which are powered by the methane. Mason Dixon Farms 'generate' more income from the sale of energy than from the sale of milk! EES has a copy of the video about the many technological advancements used at Mason Dixon.

Gettysburg Solar Tour is part of the National Solar Tour -- October 2, 2010 10 - 6
Appalachian Energy Systems invites you to attend the first Gettysburg Solar Tour. The tour originated in historic Cashtown, just west of the Civil War Battlefields, at The Amazing Heart Farm (located behind Mussleman's Greenhouses.) Visitors were able to view recently installed solar thermal evacuated tube collectors, manufactured by EarthNet Energy and Heat Transfer Products, working side by side to produce hot water, radiant floor heating and growing table heating for the potting greenhouse of The Amazing Heart Farm. There were educational presentations about the residential uses of solar and comparisions of flat plate collectors to evacuated tube collectors. Bill Mooney, a master plumber and heating engineer who has installed over 100 solar thermal systems, was the presenter. There were solar thermal displays and information available, and a representative of the Energy, Environment and Sustainability Task Force was on hand to explain Energy Raising and how it can help lower the cost of a solar thermal system. The Amazing Heart Farm will provide visitors with Certified Naturally Grown snacks.

Keep the Promise.
The Pennsylvania State Legislature promised to pass a severance tax on deep natural gas drilling in the Marcellus Shale by October 1. Now we must make sure that a promise made is a promise kept.
The drillers will make enormous profits from the natural gas they take from our land – it's only fair that they pay a reasonable tax that will go to protect our environment and local communities that "host" the drilling, fund our natural resource agencies, and help balance our budget.

Day of Climate Action in Gettysburg -- 350.org/Gettysburg October 24, 2009
October 24, 2009 was the largest worldwide day of action. Gettysburg came together as a community to form this human reminder that 350 parts-per-million is the highest safe level of carbon dioxide in our atmosphere. In the 1860's, our atmosphere had only about 280 ppm, and now that level has increased to about 40% above the historical level to 390 ppm CO2.
President Lincoln today might say:
...Now we are engaged in a great political war, testing whether that species, or any species so conceived and so dedicated, can long endure. We are met here today to address that war. We have come here to stand together and honor all who have come before and all who have yet to come. It is altogether fitting and proper that we should do this.
...With increased devotion to this cause – with high resolve that the harm we have already inflicted on our earth shall not have occurred in vain – we announce to the world our species, under the sun, shall restore harmony to this planet – and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall conspire to restore hope for our future on our one precious and finite earth.

Tapestry of the Commons Training - March 11, 2009
Patricia Hammann presented a talk on the Tapestry of the Commons. This inaugural seminar showed us that The Commons are things we all own jointly, such as air, water, peace and quiet. By weaving our ribbons, which repersent one element of The Commons, we showed how all things ae interdependent. Recent changes have allowed privatization of The Commons, which restricts universal access in an effort to exploit our common resources.
