Lou announced that the Eisenhower Institute is planning an Economics of Ecology seminar, which we look forward to. We talked about bicycle paths and ideas to make the area less car-centric and more bicycle friendly. Local oral history on Adams Community TV was discussed as a way to kindle interest in reskilling, learning nearly forgotten skills before they are lost to history. Stories about trains, bicycles, farms and annual Spring road work, and mountain heritage were suggested. Perhaps Gettysburg Festival could include the Cashtown museum?
2/9/2011
Our conversation started with the desire to get press coverage for energy raising, even if we have to pay for an ad. Lou suggested Adams Community Television, and Peter emailed Mark Worley of ACTV to inquire about a show, promo announcements and public service announcements. [After this discussion, the ACTV video promos with Lou and Sara Tower for 10/24/09 and EarthFest were added to out events web page] Bill Mooney reported that FirstEnergy offers a new $500 rebate for solar thermal systems, and provided brochures. Bill clarified that the owner should obtain state rebates before applying for utility rebates or the state will not provide teh aa rebate. Bill also reported that Hauser Winery is moving forward with a large solar thermal array! This will be a project the public can see first-hand, and will help people to understand the efficiency of solar thermal for heat production. An article is expected in Solar Today Magazine. The group was reminded that Appalachian Energy Systems, EES Task Force, and Hundredfold Farm would all participate in the Energy and You seminar at Wilson College. We discussed the need for local code enforcement and building officials to receive training on solar thermal systems as many are unfamiliar with current systems. Perhaps this could be combined with established PA Uniform Construction Code training, or EES could host a local seminar. Weis will be building three new stores which will use solar thermal. [I couldn't find a link] Bonnie reported that she had discussions with SCCAP and with Adams Electric toward renewable energy assistance for low income. Peter reported that he wrote an article for the ICPJ March newsletter, and provided Lou a copy to share. Bill pointed out that the Model T was designed to run on gasoline, kerosene, or ethanol. The discussion of local currency led to the announcement that Gettysburg quarters (US currency) are now in circulation.
1/12/2011
Bill Mooney reported that 32 people attended the combined meeting of the transiton group and Local Food Network. June 1, 2011 is the cut-off date for the bulk order for solar hot water systems. Last year we exceeded the 10 systems needed to get 15% in combined discounts offered by the manufacturer, distributor, and supplier! This year Bill will get the best discounts available on June 1 so we don't delay projects and installations can be accomplished before winter. Bill also suggested that we need to get better press coverage for energy raising, even if we buy an ad in the Merchandiser. The local papers just don't seem interested in local news. Bill will be providing a site evaluation at Hauser Winery, which led us to a discussion about local ecotourism. Tourists are already here most of the year. Will envisioned a solar bus, or other alternative fuel vehicle (methane, biodiesel, vegetable oil?), for a wine, farm, and solar tour. Peter thought this would work well on weekends, and in conjunction with a central building for a year-round weekend market and meeting room during the week. Bill suggested that a truck to pick up from the producers and staff to sell at a market would free producers to spend more time on the farm. (the eco-bus could do double duty?) A commercial kitchen would support the market and would also allow the building to function as a local culinary business incubator. Discussion followed on "GreenBucks" and ways to use local currency to promote ecotourism and local markets. Will suggested that this might get a PA Tourism grant. Will hopes to get a copy of the new movie "Economics of Happiness" to preview after it is released on 1/29. Since they will charge for public viewing, Peter suggested the Majestic Theater might be willing to show it, to make it accessible to a wider audience.
11/10/2010
We learned a little more about our first energy raising which is planned for 11/27 at 219 Ewell Avenue. The tentative teams are line set and insulation team, tube team, and inside team to fill and pressure test the system. We plan to start at 9 am, and have a working system by 12 to 12:30 when we will have lunch and an educational speaker. Maybe we will be able to wash the dishes with solar heated water! We will need a table and handouts for visitors. Mary Svikhart will be the official photographer, and we may have live music before lunch. Bill reported that he hopes to place a bulk order on June 1st 2011 and will pass on the savings again like he did this year. Bill alas reported that EarthNet Energy (Chambersburg) has arranged low cost loans through Soverign Bank. Peter reported on the DC Green Festival and the quiet, smooth power of the Ford Fusion plug-in hybrid that he drove there. Bonnie and Peter attended the Marcellus gas meeting hosted by Clean Water Action in Camp Hill. We want to show the films Gasland, and gasland Truth as soon as the schedule allows. Bill will present at the January DFA meeting. Bill also reported that WIlson College plans the Energy and You event for 2/12/2011. Bill will present a comparison of PV vs thermal. Bill will arrange to have additional tables for EES and Hundredfold Farm. EES will offer to present a small-group seminar about solar energy raising.
10/13/2010
It was nice to have a larger group again! We still need a representative from Farm House to help energize and organize us. We had a great meeting to review the Adams County Heritage Festival event, the National Solar Tour event, and the 350.org 10.10.10 Global Work Party, and talked about how best to increase the awareness of solar thermal. Energy raisings are a huge part of awareness, and we have a few in the 'pipeline', dates to be announced. We also plan to use this web site to illustrate that solar thermal is over 90% efficient and photovoltaics are less than 20% efficient. When you compare $/Watt to $/Watt, the difference will be "clear as day." Solar thermal works with partial shading, so it is a versatile way to save the green. See our Energy Raising page for more information: http://energyenvironmentsustainability.weebly.com/solar-energy-raising.html
9/8/2010
Lou Hammann and Peter Boving had a good talk about many issues, including a possible solar thermal project at Lake Heritage, and how Hundredfold Farm came to be.
8/11/2010
Sara Tower and Peter Boving had a good discussion about the Task Force and future plans. Sara is off to India and will ask another resident of Farm House to attend EES Task Force meetings. We are still interested in collaboration and getting a grant for energy raising -- perhaps Adams Electric, SCCAP, and ACNB would be interested in a demonstration renewable energy project?

7/14/2010 Environment, Energy, and Sustainability Task Force -
At their recent meeting they had a visit from Bob Appleton on Harry Stokes’ Project Gaia working with alcohol stoves in Haiti and Ethiopia. They have also connected with I Love Mountains.org, a group advocating an end to mountaintop removal coal mining, and with people concerned with tapping the Marsellus shale for natural gas. The documentary Gasland may be a possibility for the October meet-up. In terms of energy raising, the group is also moving ahead. Bill Mooney has ordered 37 thermal collectors in order to get a lower price from the manufacturer and distributor. The Neylon’s will be doing an installation soon, and we hope to get lots of publicity for Solar Energy Raising, which is based on Amish Community barn raising. . On October 2, the national Solar Homes Tour at Bill Mooney’s Amazing Heart Farm. Subsidies for solar thermal are still readily available since people have gone mostly for the photovoltaic. The Feds will pay 30% and the state 35%.

Meeting minutes
Attendees: Peter Boving, Patricia Hammann, Lou Hammann, Bonnie Fox, Emily Fox, Kathryn Forman, Bill Mooney, Bob Brandt
We discussed the next steps to take to promote our energy raising project. Bill let us know that he will be one of six presenters at Wilson College during the “Energy and You” event on 2/13. We want to have an information table at the event, and Bill will inquire. Bonnie and Bill will develop a flier with information about energy raising on one side and information about a basic system on the other side. Peter will work on a PowerPoint presentation. We also plan to have a display at Seven Springs Tree Farm on Old Route 30 West of Cashtown from 11/27 to 12/24. Bill plans to sell systems at cost and will do site visits to evaluate good solar locations. We will probably go with Heat Transfer Products systems, which are certified as a system. Our goal is to install ten systems during 2010!
The Earth Day festival will not be at Hundredfold this year as it was in 2008. We will ask Gettysburg College if there is interest in an educational festival around Earth Day, which is April 22. Hundredfold will provide contact information for speakers and displays when the time is right. Peter will ask Sara Tower to see if there is interest.
Bill is installing an outdoor wood furnace and is planning methane generation in order to replace gas used for heat, hot water, and cooking. He noted that Green Mountain College is using a methane generator. His information is at appalachianenergysystems.blogspot.com.
Peter gave a brief report on the 350 event and newspaper coverage, and on the ICPJ annual meeting with presentation by Project Gaia on safe alcohol stoves which use ethanol or methanol from local waste products in different countries. Peter is interested is seeing Mason-Dixon Farm’s methane recovery system.
Patricia talked about entropy, and the fact that we really can’t buy energy. She had a tour of an organic lemon farm in Davis, California.
Bob reported his frustration of dealing with climate change denial, and the type of disinformation that is accepted. We share this frustration.
Jeff of RePower America spoke about his organization and efforts toward passage of the Kerry/Boxer Bill. He noted that Senator Specter voted on Thursday to pass the bill out of committee, and Senator Casey supports “clean coal”.
The next Task Force meeting is December 9 at 6:30 pm at the Adams County Library in Gettysburg in the Eisenhower Room.

Meeting notes
Attendees: Peter Boving, Joe Carter, Brett Snyder, Lou Hammann, Emily Fox, Bonnie Fox, Bill Mooney, Sara Tower, Patricia Hammann, Joe Breighner
Energy Raising – Lou has found three additional people who are interested in the possibility of an energy raising project for their homes. Habitat for Humanity is interested in an energy raising on their Fall construction project, however we would need to find the approximately $4,000 funding. Lou also has found two people with skills and experience installing in solar energy systems who are interested in working with us, and offered to keep a list of interested persons at Hundredfold Farm. Often visitors express an interest in renewable energy after a visit to Hundredfold, and we can help with the design and by making a renewable energy project affordable. Bonnie noted that PAREI just got a $99,000 grant. We need a grant writer! It was also noted that new homes in Hawaii must have solar hot water. In other states, new homes must be solar ready by having a pipe chase to the roof. Bill recommended getting a discount on materials through quantity orders (8-10 units per order). Financing of energy raising projects through a co-op was discussed, and Lou plans to inquire if ACNB would provide low cost loans for this purpose. Sponsorship possibilities, such as Adams Electric were mentioned. The task force feels that we have sufficient interest to move forward, and we voted to request $150 from the steering committee in order to purchase the membership and resource materials from PAREI. We will gather names of interested people at Hundredfold, the Heritage Festival, and 350 events and plan to have a kick-off meeting on the fourth Wednesday in January, with a goal of at least one energy raising project in the spring.
Adams County Heritage Festival – September 20 12:00 – 5:00 pm at the Gettysburg Rec Park. We have task force members signed up to help staff the table. We will assist ICPJ with signs for compost, recycle and trash containers. We will also have information on the task force, energy raising, 350, Youth for Sustainable Future, compostable tableware and recycling. Brett will provide three posters with the numerals 3 5 0 for children and adults to personalize. Bonnie provided pens and crayons. The large 350 banner will be a focal point.
www.350.org/gettysburg October 24 3:30 – 4:30 pm on Seminary Ridge lawn, Chambersburg Street side. Photos are planned at 3:50 pm. We will have an actor to portray President Lincoln and present our Gettysburg Address. Sara provided the revised Gettysburg Address, and will coordinate with the College for a sound system. Lou has a backup (small) sound system if needed. Sara ordered the 3’x6’ banner for $75. We also want to have posters and publicity fliers by the heritage festival. Brett has contacted WITF radio. Committee members were asked to follow up with their contacts now that we have the location established.

Meeting notes 7/8/2009
The task force discussed the recent Federal cap and trade legislation, and its impacts.
Plans were discussed for having a table at the Adams County Heritage Festival on September 20. We will focus on our local event for 350.org on October 24th, and will present a variety of awareness information including plastics recycling and education about maize plastic which is used by vendors at the Festival.
Carolyn George spoke about the Scotland School as a possible ecovillage.
Emily Fox announced that Youth for Sustainable Future will host a Victory Garden campaign.
Peter asked about the Elm Street community garden, and learned that they are accepting compost. Kayla Siviy has some photos of the recent soup kitchen event there.
Bonnie let the group know that finding a certified installer for the solar energy raising project is a problem. She plans to look outside Adams County to find one.
Brett suggested that people can change their profile photo on Facebook to the 350.org logo to raise awareness.
Sara Tower provided a very well designed plan to host a Gettysburg event on October 24. Plans include a march through Gettysburg and conclude with a rally at the Rec Park with music. Details of the plan are in process, and will change as more people become involved. A goal is to involve many other organizations in the community, and a list of prospects was provided for us to sign up. More ideas were generated during the discussion: begin with a film festival, walk or bike to the starting point of the march, plant 350 trees at Hundredfold Farm, carpool, involve radio and TV coverage, ring church bells 350 times, march from the Peace Light to the National Cemetery, use chalk to mark 350 on the sidewalks, and stickers on apples at the farmer’s market. We want to kick off the 350 event at the Heritage Festival. Our table will have a large banner which children can help paint with handprints.
Note: The DFA Steering Committee authorized up to $100 funding for supplies at the July 15 meeting.
Meeting June 10th
Note from Peter Boving:
The Task Force for Energy, Environment, and Sustainability will meet at the Adams County Library in Gettysburg on the second Wednesday, June 10th. The meeting will be from 6:30 to 8 pm in the USS Eisenhower Room. I'll be out of town and Bonnie Fox will host the meeting.
We had a good field trip to the PotomacWindEnergy.com farm on May 16th. I was surprised to not hear any wind noise from the blades, and to hear the varying pitch, low whine of the alternator. There were ten wind generators in use, including modern 2.4 KW Skystreams, and two old-time American-style metal windmills converted to generate electricity.
After the discussion at EES May meeting, I have decided to install about 2KW of solar PV on my roof. This appears to be a good time, with the convergence of lower PV panel costs and PA Sunshine rebates.
Bob Appleton will host the film "Power of Community" at the library on June 14th, 2 pm. The film is about the way Cubans grew food as a community and made energy locally. We can learn a lot from their example of self-sufficiency.

Meeting notes
A presentation of the Tapestry of the Commons was presented by Patricia Hamann to facilitate the development of our group. We discussed the physical treasures which humanity owns in common (such as air, water, and quiet) and the ways these are woven with our cultural treasures (such as language, music, and baseball).
The group felt that our birthrights (things which we have always owned) have been hijacked for individual or corporate gain, and that we, as a people are just beginning to reclaim ownership of our world for the common good.
We discussed many examples of privatization of our resources, including ownership of energy, and the diversion of music and art for advertising.
Lou Hamann observed that it is easier for corporations to control energy commodities of coal, gas, and oil, than it will be for them control the distribution of the sun.

Task Force for Energy, Environment, and Sustainability 2/11/09
Meeting minutes
The objectives of this inaugural meeting were to get to know each others' individual interests and to begin looking for the connections and interests we have in common. These objectives were met, and I am inspired by the networking we have accomplished in just one meeting.
Pat Hammann read the letter from Barack Obama in reply to her daughter, Rebecca about his hopes for Rebecca's daughter, Lucy. "You are right to be hopeful, because our children face a future of limitless possibility. We know that a sustainable way of life is essential to our children and grandchildren. But beyond that, the quest for sustainability that you described with such eloquence and passion is integral as well, because it is a powerful amplifier, motivating peoples and nations to act in concert so that all may benefit."
The Task Force found common interest in Hundredfold Farm, local currency, energy raising, the visit of Bill McKibben in April, local foods, gardening, solar hot water, photovoltaics, and geothermal systems. We wish to explore these areas and offer at our March meeting a variety of plans for local projects, awareness events, and ways we can help each other accomplish our shared vision of a sustainable future. If you have an idea in mind, research what you can, pick a date, and present your plan! Be impatient. Be the change you've been waiting for.
The agenda for the March meeting includes presentation by Patricia Hammann of Tapestry of the Commons. If you wish to be included on the agenda, please email me by the first Wednesday of the month. Please provide the subject and specify the amount of time requested for your presentation and discussion.
The next meeting is 3/11 - at 6:30 pm at 227 W. High Street.
