The price of oil, gasoline and food are rising, and we can see our opportunity, and duty, to act. We work together with individuals and local organizations to build a more resilient community and begin the transition away from dependence on oil. In response to multiple crises, we choose to "Think globally and act neighborly."

See the Transition pageThe Transition Town movement is one way for local communities to deal effectively with climate change and peak oil. We are networking to make a smoother transition toward a resilient and sustainable community. The transition Town movement is gaining "steam" in the US. To get started, we formed a small study group and read the book Deep Economy by Bill McKibben. See upcoming meeting announcements above, and see our Transition Town page for much more information on this resilient community-building initiative.

12-4-2010 Solar Energy Raising in Gettysburg
The energy raising idea is based upon the Amish barn raising tradition. We need all sorts of things and skills at a raising -- coffee and donuts, parking control, helping hands, lemonade server, lunch maker, lunch server, after lunch speaker, photographer.... You get the picture, this is a work/PARTY!
Solar hot water is not difficult to install, as we now know first-hand! Our Solar Energy Raising Group is willing to volunteer our energy to help you design and install your own system. The PA Sunshine rebates ARE NOT gone. Rebates are available for solar thermal at the 35% level! Combine this with a 30% Federal tax credit, and you're talking real money.
The US Department of Energy recognizes the value of solar thermal systems for hot water and home heating as "The Next Wave: Solar Water Heating Systems Yield Immediate Energy Savings."

Electric Vehicles page - "Batteries included""Wouldn't it be nice if you had your own gas pump right in your garage? And what if gas from your personal pump cost less than $1 a gallon?" Electric vehicles are the best way to continue our mobile lifestyle with the technology we have available now, and without funding petrodictators. Do you want your money going to the middle east, or to central Pennsylvania? Electric cars do require some infrastructure, but most of us already own an extension cord!

Connect The Dots: May 5, 2012We wish civilization to get back in balance with the biosphere in which we live. Sure, sustainability requires thinking of our grandchildren's grandchildren, but climate change is evident right now. The planet is not the same as when we were a child. This recent climate report forcasts a million deaths per year by 2030.

Marcellus shale gas hydrofracking page - Not in our aquifer you don't!
Now the gas drillers are trying to use eminent domain to take private property for gas lines.
We need to establish royalties for our gas when it is taken from us, as fair severance tax will.
Josh Fox set out to discover the impacts of horizontal drilling and hydrofracking. Well, he learned so much that he made the HBO film Gasland. He found people terrorized by the fear that the gas in the water lines would cause an explosion when they ran the dishwasher or did a load of laundry.
Residents of Dimock and other Pennsylvania towns are suffering from well water permanently contaminated with blow-back frack fluid and heavy metals, including barium and strontium. "Would you like some Dimock lemonade?"
